Is it Preferable to Create Mini Websites or Authority Sites?
When deciding whether to build minisites or authority sites, you really have to consider your own preferences. Making broad generalizations about either kind of site is not very helpful. Some people, of course, have strong feelings about this one way or the other. It’s sometimes helpful, though, if you can open your mind and look at the virtues of each possibility. An open mind will give you the greatest range of choices as well as more opportunities for profits. The following comparison of mini sites and authority sites can be helpful if you’re trying to clarify this issue.
Sometimes people are only interested in a particular aspect of a given market or niche. For some marketers, this is the perfect choice. This thin slice of the market is known in some circles as a micro-niche. For this small market segment, authority sites simply do not perform as well as mini sites. Mini sites are excellent for taking one or two very focused keywords and dominating the search engine results for those keywords. That is, of course, assuming that competition for these keywords isn’t overcrowded. You may also target your micro-niche within an authority site if interested. But if you have no interest to do so, then the mini site is the best choice.
Years ago it was possible to get a highly optimized minisite ranking very well, but that is not the case now in 2010. The attraction of minisites is they are easy and fast to build, plus the profit realized will be much faster than with an authority site. If you choose an authority site, then you are looking at spending a lot of time for future rewards. That is exactly what it is, and it is an investment of your time and money. You can compare it to buying stocks every year and holding onto them for the future. Even though it takes time to rank an authority site, that is ok because the owners are not in a rush to do it. However, people are good with waiting because there are many possibilities with monetizing a highly ranked authority site.
An authority website gives you the opportunity for greater credibility at a faster rate. There is an effect that a large website with great content has on a visitor. There is a leap many people make mentally that tells them that the person behind the larger site really is the better authority on the topic. This alone will establish credibility for some people. This is something that would not often happen with mini sites. That doesn’t mean it never happens only that it happens rarely.
Deciding whether to create an authority site or a mini site is one that may come down to how Google ranks different sites in those search results. Mini sites still offer some advantages for marketers, but there is the issue of trying to find new ways to keep traffic coming. In fact, mini sites should remain a part of any good marketing plan. However, there are plenty more benefits to be had for creating a larger site as far as organic traffic goes.
